DESCRIPTION:"Managing Byzantine Heritage in the Modern World: The Developme
nt of Byzantine Studies in Turkey" by Prof. Koray Durak (Bosphorus Univers
ity\, Istanbul\, Turkey). This lecture traces the evolution of Byzantine s
tudies in Turkey from the late Ottoman period to the present\, with partic
ular emphasis on the roles played by both state and non-state actors\, as
well as local and foreign contributors. It examines how shifting political
  ideologies—including Kemalism\, nationalism\, Westernism\, and religiou
s conservatism—have shaped and reshaped the study of Byzantine times. Th
e talk explores how Byzantine heritage has been reinterpreted and often in
 strumentalized.\n\nCONTACT: 262-4213\, balgamis@wisc.edu\n\nURL: https://k

DESCRIPTION:A Humanities Without Boundaries lecture with Rob Nixon. In 2005
\, Richard Louv sounded the alarm that children were trading too much outd
oor time for indoor time on screens. His coinage—nature deficit disorder
—has inspired myriad studies into the benefits of getting outside. That
research reveals a so-called green dividend\, the measurable physiological
and psychological improvements that accrue from natural immersion. Yet su
ch peer-reviewed studies typically ignore the way natural spaces are impli
cated in topographies of social power.\n\nCONTACT: maulbricht@wisc.edu\n\n
